Not sure where you're going with the series, but this was very well put:

"The Colossians were being sold Jesus plus… Paul shuts that down. Christ is preeminent. In Him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. …You don’t move on from Jesus; you learn to walk in Him. That reality changes your mentality. …None of this is legalism. Sanctification is a work of God’s free grace"

I've run across this several times, Christians who want to move up to 'Advanced' status, having become bored with the basics. And then they start looking for silly stuff to signal that status.

An elder in my church was telling me Sunday about his son's church, where they've gotten in something of a tizzy over head coverings lately. I haven't got anything against those, in fact I kind of like them, but not if they're turned into some sort of signal of superior Christian 'advancement', whatever that is.

Staying focused on Christ and the basics of the faith will keep us humble, and hopefully immune from this urge to move on to something more.
