This afternoon, following the recommendation of its elders, East River Church voted to resign from its membership in the Communion of Reformed Evangelicals (CREC). Last fall, the CREC tightened some of the denomination’s language regarding sacramental reciprocity between member churches. As a result, our teachings and practices now fall outside these new requirements.
Consequently, we faced the prospect of overhauling our doctrinal and constitutional statements to align with this new standard. However, since our convictions have not changed, we have decided to maintain our position and practices.
Furthermore, we have no desire to be a source of division or controversy or to challenge the unanimous decision made by the church council. For this reason, we recommended peacefully resigning our membership. This approach allows us to remain true to our original course while respecting our denomination’s decision.
Ultimately, this vote reflects our commitment to continue pursuing the vision and doctrinal commitments that have guided East River since its inception.
We are grateful for the role the CREC played in our foundational years. There is no ill-will from us and the leadership of the CREC has only being kind towards us. We will continue to encourage and exhort one another as the Lord allows. Friends respect principled differences, and that is the case in this situation.

Don’t know all the complexity but always appreciate your openness and honesty about life. Never been an Elder or a teaching Elder but have been a baptized follower of Christ for over forty years, life gets bumpy and church life can get bumpy from time to time. It’s always comforting to know God never changes and is closer than a brother.
Honestly, pretty frustrating to hear this. The hordes are at the gates of Christendom yet you are disfellowshipping with the only solid reformed and conservative presbyterian denomination... We got to remain unified in times like this. Open to pushback just seems like a sad situation IMO.
